Army brats move every two to three years. This means many schools and being “the new kid” over and over again. Hi, my name is Maddie and I am an Army brat. I am 14 years old, I have moved 7 times and attended 10 different schools. This summer we are moving from Alaska to Florida. We are going to travel 4,630 miles! Wow, that is a lot of miles! All along the way we will stop and see family and friends. These adventures are normal for Army brats. We share the same lifestyle. But, all of our experiences are different because we all live in different locations, at different times.

From this experience I created Brat Stamps, they are stickers I have designed for each Army post. I wanted something to show off all the wonderful places I have lived and all the cool things I have done. I thought other kids would like to do the same.

Every Army mom has a sign in their house telling what duty stations they have lived. Why can’t we have our own version?

With Brat Stamps, kids can collect them and show pride in their adventurous life. Kids can put their Brat Stamp stickers on notebooks, laptops, bike helmets, water bottles, camp trunks, etc.

Leaving friends and homes behind is sad, but Army brats get to do the coolest things. I have lived in Germany for 2 ½ years. We traveled all over Europe and my favorite experience was to see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris. While living in Alaska I have had the opportunity to XC ski, downhill ski, snowboard, snowshoe, canoe, white water rafting, hike, and wrestle for my school team.  I would not have all these cool experiences if it wasn’t for my Dad being a Soldier.

I want other kids to focus on the positive side of this life and I think collecting Brat Stamps is something they can get excited about.

Today, we are called Military Children, this is a label that describes WHAT we are. I prefer to be called Army Brat, which identifies WHO we are. Brave. Resilient. Adventurous. Traveler.
